Goals

Goals is a map. Your longest goal sits at the start, and smaller goals branch out of it until you reach this month.

Time horizons

Every goal has a time horizon, from longest to shortest: Life, 10 years, 5 years, 3 years, 1 year, 6 months, Quarter and Month.

  • A sub-goal must have a shorter horizon than its parent. You may skip levels, for example a 1 year goal directly under Life.
  • A Month goal cannot have sub-goals. A Life goal cannot have a parent.

Create goals

  1. Press N for a new root goal and choose its time horizon.
  2. Type the title and press Enter to save. Esc cancels.
  3. Select a goal and press Tab or Enter to add a sub-goal. Choose its horizon, then type the title.
  4. Press Shift + Tab to add a parent goal above the selected goal. The new goal is inserted between the goal and its current parent.

Double-click a card to rename it. To move a branch, drag a card onto a goal with a longer horizon.

Notes and the properties menu

Press Cmd/Ctrl + Enter to write a note on the selected goal. Cmd/Ctrl + Enter saves, Enter starts a new line, Esc leaves.

Press / (or choose Goal actions on the card) to open the properties menu: Note, Add sub-goal, Add parent goal, Plan, Kanban, Complete and Delete.

Kanban and Plan for a goal

Each goal can have one Kanban board. Press K on a goal to create it (if needed) and open it. Press P to open the goal's Plan. The icons at the bottom of a card also open them. See Kanban, Plan and Workflow.

Complete, reopen and delete

  • Press X to complete a goal. A goal can be completed only when all its sub-goals are completed.
  • Press C to open Completed Goals. Choose Reopen to bring one back. A goal cannot be reopened while its parent is still completed.
  • Press Backspace to delete a goal. A goal with a Kanban board or with sub-goals cannot be deleted: delete the Kanban or the sub-goals first.
